Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, where tradition meets passion,
Every year, Saint-Tropez is transformed into a veritable maritime spectacle during the Voiles de Saint-Tropez. This prestigious nautical event brings together sailing enthusiasts from all over the world for a week of spectacular regattas, friendly encounters and celebrations in October. In this article, we invite you to immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of the Voiles de Saint-Tropez and find out what makes it one of the must-attend traditional sailing events.
The history of Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez,
It all began in September 1981, when a group of Americans brought their boats into the port of Saint-Tropez after competing in the Swan Cup in Porto Cervo. They decided to take part in a few regattas and began to make new acquaintances in the region.
Then a new boat arrived: “Ikra“. A yachtsman raised the idea of a race between the two boats. The captains agreed and the race was on. A prize-giving ceremony for this little race was improvised at Club 55 by Patrice Colmont, the manager of the venue. The following year, the American wanted revenge, so the race was repeated.
In subsequent years, the race became a symbol of the end of the season and a chance for the locals to get together after a summer in which they worked tirelessly. It’s an authentic celebration, with no glitz or glamour.
The Voiles de Saint-Tropez offer a unique spectacle with the participation of different types of sailing boats, from classic yachts to modern racing yachts. Every day, the regattas take place in the Bay of Saint-Tropez, offering a magnificent spectacle to the many spectators who turn out. The yachts, hoisting their colourful sails, battle it out for first place in various categories, creating a competitive and captivating atmosphere.
The tradition of classic yachts,
One of the highlights of the Voiles de Saint-Tropez is the showcasing of classic yachts. These majestic boats, often a hundred years old, are living witnesses to the history of sailing. Passionate owners and their crews strive to preserve and restore these maritime gems, and the Voiles de Saint-Tropez offers them an exceptional opportunity to showcase them.
