The vine flower : really it exists?

Yes the vine as a plant, will get a flower! Very discrete, short-lived flowers, we do not always see it. Its aroma is so delicate! During 2 to 3 days you will be able to see the flower blooming; you then have to be present at the perfect time : usually around end of may, beggining of june. Follow Beyond The Wine Facebook page to be advised in time!

This flower is following the bud and will be transforming into the future grape, the one that we either eat as a table grape or the one used by the winemaker to produce its wine.

Here are some usual facts about the vine :

Here in the AOC Côtes de Provence, type of grapes are very diverse (12 are authorized in the designation).

Red grapes: Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Carignon, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tibouren (local one)
White grapes : Rolle (vermentino), Ugni blanc, sémillon, clairette

It is very hard to identify the grape you are facing even if you are a Professional. If you really want to know more you will have to study Ampélography. (ampelos = the vine, graphie = the writting) in other words the study of the vine (its leafes, its grapes, etc…). Good luck with that as we count more than 6000 type of grapes around the world…
